The city’s top four malls have been closed for the past two months, with the last time the malls were open was March 20, 2017.
Hull, The Galleria, and the Texas A&M University Center were the most active malls.
Galleria closed at 3:30 a.m.
March 20 after it became unsafe for guests to enter the building.
Houston Police Chief David Brown said the incident began when a woman fell through a window and landed on a railing.
“She had to get out and we have to do this on our own,” Brown said.
“We’re not going to do it because of her.”
Brown said that while some guests could have been rescued, it was not a successful operation.
“The fact that it’s been in a mall and people were trying to get in there without permission, that’s unfortunate,” he said.
Brown said the mall was in the process of getting an additional security barrier installed.
The Houston Galleria is one of the largest in the city.
It was built in 1955.
The Galleria closed on Monday, March 21, after police said an elderly woman fell from the second floor.
The woman was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital in critical condition.
The Texas A & M University Center was also closed, as was The Galleries Galleria at 11:30 p.m., March 20.
The mall has a full staff of 20 and about 1,000 customers a day.
The city has not announced a cause for the closures.
